The Messy Truth About Finding Your Path (Its Not What You Think)
Every clear vision started out as someone’s Hazy Dream….
Ever notice how every successful person seems to have the same “secret”? They hit you with that “you need a clear vision” or “just follow your passion” talk. Cool. Thanks. But… HOW?
Like, how exactly am I supposed to magically know my passion? Where’s this crystal-clear vision supposed to come from?
My Expensive Education in Finding My Path
Let me take you behind the scenes of my very messy (and very expensive) journey to clarity:
The Swing Trading Phase
Lost an ummm… undisclosed amount of money in what we’ll call “market tuition fees.” Bought a course stayed up until 3am studying charts, analyzing market trends, watching financial news, and discovered that I actually loved market psychology more than setting up price alerts and backtesting trading strategies. Sometimes the most valuable lessons come with a price tag.
The One-Visitor Store Experience
Bought a “done for you” online beauty accessories online store that got exactly one visitor (that one visitor was me). But that “failed” store taught me about branding, web design, and SEO.
The Cold Calling Chronicles
While watching a YouTube video on how to make money online a guru said that high-ticket sales was the fastest way to make money online. I dove in head first. I took the plunge and invested in a comprehensive course that had me practicing sales scripts with a pencil in my mouth, in my car during lunch breaks at work. I would literally be shaking and sweating during “role playing” calls. I broke out in more “cold sweats” than I made “cold calls”, but I loved writing the sales scripts and learned about storytelling.
The Online Marketing Money Pit
My next “this is it” moment was when I discovered online marketing. The logic was irresistible: Why go through the hassle of creating your own product, dealing with research, designing and building prototypes, sourcing materials and supplies, legal requirements, and distribution systems when there were successful products already out there that I could market? Well, I burned through $500 in Facebook ads with zero sales, because, to be honest my copywriting was terrible! But that experience pushed me to actually learn how to write, which sparked something unexpected.
The Photography Plot Twist
Frustrated with all of my “failures,” I decided to make a radical change. Grabbed a camera and hit the streets thinking about that high school photography class that I loved. This was it, this was my passion. 1 week later I was bored out of my mind. But I discovered how much I missed writing. Sometimes the path to clarity isn’t finding what works – it’s about discovering what doesn’t work.
The Framework That Actually Works
1. Start Before You Are Ready
You will never be ready. Take small imperfect steps. My first attempts at everything were embarrassingly bad- and that’s exactly as it should be. You won’t be good at anything when you first start. Your messy first attempt is perfect exactly as it is.
2. Collect Evidence Not Expectations
Instead of trying to force clarity, treat each attempt as a data point:
- What lights you up?
- What drains you?
- What makes time fly?
Every “nope, not it” is actually a step towards clarity.
3. Embrace The Uncomfortable Middle
That uneasy feeling when you are not sure if you are on the right path? That’s not a sign that you are lost – it’s a sign you are growing. You are supposed to feel that way when you are finding your way.
The Real Secret To Clarity
Want to know what actually creates clarity? It’s not meditation, vision boards, or even detailed planning (though this things help). It’s the willingness to:
- Take imperfect action
- Learn from the results
- Adjust your course
- Rinse and Repeat
Your Turn: The Tiny Steps Challenge
Here is what you can do right now:
- Think of something you’ve been waiting to start until you get “clarity”
- Then take a tiny action:
- Writing a book? Write one sentence
- Starting a business? Think of one thing you wish existed.
- Want to create content? Post one thought on social media.
- Learning something new? Watch one 5 minute YouTube video on the subject.
The Permission Slip You Didn’t Know You Needed
Real Talk: You have full permission to:
- Start before you know what you are doing.
- Change your mind when something doesn’t feel right.
- Learn through messy action.
- Collect failures like they are Pokeman cards
- Define success your own way
Let’s Make This Real
Drop a comment and tell me:
- What tiny, embarrassingly small step will you take in the next 24 hours?
- What “failure” taught you something unexpected?
- Remember: The path to your dreams isn’t some boring straight line. It’s a beautiful mess of loops, twists, and unexpected u-turns. And that’s exactly what makes it yours.
